Smash Puny Class Registration! [Feb. 13th, 2008|09:57 pm]
[Current Location |my room]
[mood | infuriated]
[music |What's Up People?! - Maximum The Hormone]

Okay, so I have to register for classes for my final quarter (...why am I so close to graduating college already?!). Game Design Portfolio, Art History Elective, Free Elective. Sounds easy, right? WRONG.

Portfolio was at first only available Monday & Wednesday at 2:00 pm, the same time as the Egyptian Art class. I hesitated in signing up, and Portfolio filled up. But now there's another one at 8:00 am (ugh) on the same day, so I signed up. That means I can take Egyptian Art, right? WRONG.

Turns out Egyptian Art has a prerequisite class that I didn't take. There is an Asian Art class that I'm interested in (yes, I realize it won't talk about manga and anime) on Tuesday & Thursday at 8:00 am (ugh again). I could try to waive the prerequisite, but I'm not sure if I want to go through that process yet again.

But here comes the real kicker. One of my professors recommended two modeling and texturing classes for my last elective. They're relatively the same, but teach different texturing techniques apparently. So I e-mailed both professors about the classes. One of these classes, Digital Form, Space and Lighting is only at 8 am all week. I can't sign up for Asian Art if this is the class I want to take.

There's a number of options for Art History (more if I consider Architectural History), but these two were the ones that interested me most. And then there's the fact that my list gets shorter if I only consider classes that don't conflict with the modeling classes.

Gah! Why must this be so complicated?!

Robots in the Skies? [Jul. 18th, 2007|12:20 am]
[Tags|]
[mood | ecstatic]

I saw Transformers 16 days ago. How the slag have I not gushed on and on about my love for the film? I've been waiting most of my life for it. Maybe I've been waiting so long, I'm still stuck in "it hasn't been released" mode and it hasn't sunk in.

And oh, dear GOD, was that an awful time for the online fandom. Nearly two YEARS of "why isn't Bumblebee a Beetle?!", "Prime's flames are stupid!", "Ironhide's supposed to be red!", "Megatron looks like ass!", "OMG they look leik BIONICALS!", "Michael Bay raped my childhood!" (I wish that last one was a joke, but it is pretty funny). I swear, I was probably one of the more optimistic people, but I still had (some) gripes with the development of the film.

But now I guess it's time to discuss it.

Spoilers for those who may not have seen it (for shame) )

So many memories. ...Why haven't I seen it a second time?!

Final Fantasy Withdrawals [Feb. 27th, 2007|02:54 am]
[mood | annoyed]
[music |Eyes on Me - FFVIII]

As [info]chibi_sobek knows, I've wanted to play Final Fantasy VII yet again so I can use Tifa more, after ignoring her so much during my many failed attempts to get the Barret and Yuffie dates. But now my need to play a Final Fantasy has gotten worse.

For my Game Design Criticism and Analysis class, I had to write a paper comparing two successive games in a series, detailing the changes made and how successful/important they were. I eventually settled on Final Fantasy VIII and IX, because of not only the drastic difference between the two, but also because I think they're both good games that sometimes get crapped on for no good reason.

So while I was working on the paper, I come to the part about how the series progressed technically from VIII to IX. Since my memory of both games is a little bit hazy, I looked up some pictures and cinemas. Watching VIII's ending got me all misty-eyed and full of nostalgia, and watching IX's ending immediately after didn't help matters either.

Now I want to play all three PlayStation Final Fantasies (VIII the most), but my PS2 and games are all back home. Except for FFVII (chibi_sobek has that one).

Maybe I'll just watch Organization XIII being awesome to distract me from my need for FFVIII by focusing on the fact that Kingdom Hearts II Final Mix+ might not come to the US.

Happy(?) Birthday to Me [Feb. 12th, 2007|08:52 pm]
[Current Location |not in class]
[mood | crappy]

Not much can top being sick on my 21st birthday. I can legally drink, but there's no way I'm mixing alcohol with sinus problems tonight. Hell, I didn't even go to class tonight just because I wasn't in the mood to sit and learn until 10:30. I think the only thing that can top being sick today is all the little things in the past few weeks. It's been like a series of ups and downs.

I went to the health clinic this morning after a spike in the weather kick-started my change-of-the-season sinus problems and I wasn't getting better after nearly a week. At least I have new medicine to help me get better while I slowly kill my liver with.

Today also began the third week without my laptop. The backlight on the screen won't light thanks to a faulty inverter board (or whatever). The damage? $200 (give or take) in parts and labor. I'm just glad that SCAD has 24-hour computer labs for work and internet and Dad is taking care of the repair costs.

Speaking of computers, I got a (small and not-outrageously-expensive) Wacom graphics tablet. And I haven't had the chance to use it because I don't have my laptop, not every computer in the Dyson computer lab has the Wacom driver installed, and my 3D model isn't at the point where I can use the tablet for ZBrush.

I did get $100 from my grandparents for my birthday, but of course, Toys R Us didn't have the G1 Soundwave reissue yet. My parents sent me some brownies, but my schedule made getting to the package center before they closed impossible. (Well, I wasn't forced to go to the lecture one of my professors was giving, but I wanted to)

Finally got to play Guitar Hero (II). It's so cool, but curse those rhythm games and their expensive controllers. Yes, technically I can afford it, but I'm not ready to drop $80. Especially when I don't have my PS2 with me.

I saw Pan's Labyrinth over the weekend. Good movie, but damn is it depressing. Also there wasn't as much of the fantasy stuff as the commercials implied. But at least the fantasy stuff that was there looked spectacular.

I haven't watched 24 since the two-night premiere thanks to my 8:00-10:30 class on Mondays. Okay, I take some of the blame because I was too lazy to find space on a tape to record it, but BitTorrent was a pretty good alternative until my laptop decided to crap out on me.

Oh, and here's a good one. Kamikaze Sushi, SCAD's anime club, is temporarily disbanded due to the club president dropping the ball. Seriously. I don't quite get why any of it happened, but it's pretty annoying. At least Gamers Guild doesn't seem to have any problems.

God, right now I just want to get over whatever the hell has me sick (the doctor told me it wasn't a sinus infection yet) so I can go out with some friends this weekend and have something to drink. And see Ghost Rider.

Kamikaze Sushi - Fall 2006 review [Nov. 19th, 2006|02:50 pm]
[mood | sick]
[music |Hirano Aya - Bouken Desho? Desho?]

I know I should be working on finals right now, but I'd rather wait for my headache to go away. I don't know if I slept through a migraine or am about to get one if the Excedrin doesn't kick in, but I don't want to be stressing over sculpting, making the booklet about my group's level design project, or writing a short screenplay when my head is bothering me, so I'd rather do something less tedious.

Eyeshield 21
-It's about American Football, and yet it's good. That's because it's character-driven, like Prince of Tennis and Prince of Bread... I mean, Yakitate!! Japan. Watching this show is almost as if every episode of Prince of Tennis was a chibi episode. It's funny, nearly every character is drawn in a different style, and some things are just plain implausible (like team captain Hiruma's never-ending supply of guns).

Ouran High School Host Club
-Words cannot express how funny this series is. It seems so formulaic (girl is mistaken for a boy, said girl is forced to join host club, other girls fall in love with said girl, (possibly gay) guys in club fall for said girl), and yet it's just plain awesome. I'm so glad I've grown to accept yaoi and BL rather than hate it.

The Melancholy of Suzumiya Haruhi
-I'm about ready to call this one of the greatest anime series ever. It's a little complicated to explain the plot without telling almost the whole story, but it's about a strange girl who forms a high school club and some weird stuff happens. In a way, it's kind of like Tenchi Muyo. There's a normal guy and several people with strange powers/backgrounds, but it's not a harem anime. What I love about it is the non-linear story telling (for example, the tenth episode aired is the fourth in the story), and the constant change in plots (some episodes are action-oriented, while one focuses on Kyon, the normal character, going to buy a heater for the club room). Good thing there's a new series coming out in the future because 14 episodes was too short.

Welcome to the NHK
-Wow. I thought Genshiken hit close to home, but this one takes the cake. It's about Satou Tatsuhiro, a hikikomori (kind of like an otaku) who's trying desperately to change his ways yet still clings to his lifestyle because he believes there's a conspiracy designed to turn people into hikikomori. The show is absurdly hilarious, especially because of Satou's expressions and the performance by the actor-who-sounds-like-a-bit-like-Koyasu-Takehito-but-isn't-Koyasu-Takehito. My only problem is how I relate to Satou. It's funny, but unlike Genshiken I feel a bit uncomfortable afterwards because it hits too close to home. But still, it's a great series.

78 Live Gators! [Oct. 24th, 2006|01:09 am]
I've been meaning to post this for a while.

Back in mid-September when I went back to school, Dad and I went to two of the greatest restaurants ever: The Shell House, and The Crab Shack. Both have delicious seafood and a great, casual atmosphere. After all, nothing is more casual than drinking out of plastic cups and having a hole in the center of the table with a garbage can below it to throw oyster shells into.

Both restaurants are nearly identical, but The Crab Shack has something that The Shell House doesn't. That's right, 78 baby alligators! And I took some pictures of them. No, chibi-sobek, they're not on the menu. )

City of Heroes/Villains [Sep. 13th, 2006|11:24 am]
I'm still surprised that I got into Online RPGs, considering I was so opposed to the idea of continuing to pay money to play. But it's relatively easy to be swayed when the monthly fee is still $15 if you have both games, and I can make some of my X-Men fan-characters.

Speaking of which, here's two of them... )

My priorities as an author have gone out the window [Sep. 6th, 2006|01:36 am]
So. As some (read: around 5) people know, I've been "writing" a few large-scale stories over the past couple of years. None of them are finished, though I swear Shedding of Blood will be done before it's a decade old (I started it after Clarkson Reunion '98). But hey, it'll be MUCH better than it would have been had I finished it when I was 12. *shudders at the thought*

But I have a problem that's preventing these stories from getting finished. Final Fantasy VII fanfics. That's right. Fanfics. With an "S". One's a tasteful Cloud X Tifa story which seems kinda pointless since their relationship still doesn't go anywhere. The other is the self-explanatorally (is that a word?) titled "Vincent Gets a Cell Phone". Cid guest-stars, and hilarity ensues.

I should be ashamed of myself for writing these, but then I remember the effort I'm putting into Gundam AC300. The only thing I am embarrassed about is that the Cloud and Tifa fic is almost done. And it's only five days old. Then again, it's only five pages, but I didn't intend for it to be an epic.

Maybe I can get some serious story-writing done when I'm at school. I won't have any money to spend/waste on video games and action figures, and it's probably just what I'll need to drag myself away from the TV/internet and get outside (in stagnant 90 degree weather with very little shade). Assuming I get time between class assignments.

Something-that-rhymes-with-Snakes on a Plane [Aug. 6th, 2006|02:17 am]
I've been meaning to post this. Much like the rest of the internet, us folks at TFW 2005 are really looking forward to Snakes on a Plane. Naturally, this leads to a lot of fun with words that rhyme with "snakes", "plane", and Photoshop.

There's 13 pages in this thread, although there's a bit of filler with people saying something like "LOL" or "roflcoptor" without posting their own picture, but that's to be expected. Unfortunately, some pics are missing from the thread thanks to a few people who like to change their signatures at the drop of a hat, and a few of them are in-jokes. But most of them are great.

And just so mine makes sense for anyone not familiar with Metal Gear, whenever Snake dies, the Colonel yells Snake's name a couple of times.

*note* And if you haven't seen it, these are based on this picture.

*another note* Because I've been watching too much Whose Line is it Anyway?, I've made a new one.

So I finally saw X-Men 3... [Jun. 28th, 2006|02:06 am]
It was good. Sure, there were a few... unsatisfying parts. Like most of the deaths. I barely even like Cyclops, and yet his death just plain didn't sit well with me. And come on, Psylocke, Arclight, and Quill (I refuse to call him Kid Omega) just went 'poof' along with all the soliders when Jean went crazy again? Such a waste. Multiple Man was terribly underused, but I saw that coming. As was Angel, despite the existence of publicity photos featuring him in an X-Men uniform. And there was no Havok (though I knew that ages ago).

But still, it was pretty good. Fight scenes were fun. The two-stories-in-one-movie plot was more cohesive than I've heard from others. And Sir Ian McKellen really hammed it up for "Mag Neato" this time, especially his expression when he attacked the military convoy to free Mystique. Speaking of her, I loved the part where she ratted him out to the government.

And I've realized I should have gone to film school to write screenplays, because I've already got a plan for what should happen in X-Men 4 (It's a bit long though).

Of course, some credit should go to chibi_sobek )

His crazy antics make my heart smile [May. 28th, 2006|12:56 am]
I "discovered" (read: was told about) YouTube several weeks ago. Needless to say, it's more or less a suitable alternative to BitTorrent, which has been blocked by SCAD *grr* *snarl*...

Anyway, just recently, I discovered some awesomeness on YouTube that I know [info]chibi_sobek will love: Gackt videos!

Now if you'll excuse me, I'ma go watch a live performance of mind forest.

I think Konami hates me [Mar. 5th, 2006|01:31 am]
[music |Castlevania soundtrack]

I picked up Castlevania Double Pack (a compilation of Harmony of Dissonance and Aria of Sorrow) for Game Boy Advance a few weeks ago. Just today, I "finished" Aria of Sorrow (as in beat the final boss, but there's still things to do). They're great games, despite the fact that most of Aria is painfully hard compared to Harmony, which was mostly easy. Unfortunately...

The creature known as Legion is a boss in both of them. I happen to hate Legion after encountering it in Symphony of the Night, where it went by a different name...

GRANFALLOON *shudders*

The worst thing is, I never thought Konami could make this creature any worse than it was in Symphony. I was wrong. Even though its Aria incarnation is practically the same, there's one key difference. The room you fight it in has a large obstruction in the center with space around the walls to travel during the fight. That's right, it follows you around the room.

I have two theories as to why Konami hates me this much. One is that I previously owned only two Castlevania games, and both were bought used. The other, is that I've been watching Battlestar Galactica. The latter doesn't make sense, but it sure is more creative.

I need to stop ignoring this... [Mar. 5th, 2006|01:05 am]
I haven't posted in my LJ since January. Plenty of stuff's been going on, I just don't think to post it. So, to sum things up...

I hate this damn place. Mainly because of the weather. Sure, it's cold back home, but at least it's consistantly cold. Savannah, on the other hand, has a high of 62 one day, then it spikes up to the high 70s before going back to the low 60s/high 50s. I'm so glad I'm going home in about a week and a half. Too bad there's so much to do in that week and a half. Speaking of which...

I despise Adobe Illustrator. In my Digital Design Aesthetics course, we used it exclusively for the first half of the quarter. And I had about 15 minutes experience with the program. The thing is, it's not terribly hard to learn. The problem is that it about 85% of it looks exactly like Photoshop, and about 15% of it works like Photoshop. Honestly, why have an eraser tool when it doesn't erase what you drag the cursor across?! Thank God we're using Photoshop now, but I still need to finish up an assignment using Illustrator.

Aside from having to be out of the dorm before 8:30 if I want to get there on time, Survey of Interactive Entertainment is awesome. To sum it up, we discuss the history of computers, video games, etc. and trends in interactive entertainment. Occassionally we play video games and discuss its strengths/weaknesses. And we had the best field trip EVAR. We went to the arcade and had to play at least one game we have never played before and write a brief review. And on the last day of classes, we're gonna go play laser tag.

Intro to Interactive Design and Game Development has been great. We started out by playing and critiquing various card/board games, then went on to working in groups on our own board games. I really should take some pictures of my group's game, Things That Go Bump, soon. Now for our final, we're writing up outlines for a video game design, something I've been doing (at a considerably simpler level) for years.

And I think I'll be making up for my lack of posts very soon...

X-Men: The (not really) 198 [Jan. 6th, 2006|01:58 am]
So I picked up the X-Men profile book of the "198" mutants that still have their powers. Aside from the fact that they listed only 132 mutants and there are really somewhere between 200 and 300 mutants with powers, I discovered something that made my head explode.

If I were a mutant, that would have been my mutant power until Marvel took it away... )

Stuff [Nov. 11th, 2005|12:00 pm]
I placed third in the Intramural Tennis B Division tournament today. Of course, there were only four players signed up on the bracket (including me) and only three of us showed up. Hooray for technicalities!

The Movies is now available for PC. Hells yeah. Can't wait to get it.

It's official. Kingdom Hearts 2 = Love. For a little while, we've known about new worlds based on Beauty and the Beast, Mulan, Hercules, 1928 Disney cartoons, Pirates of the Caribbean. But a new one has been revealed... I'm too excited to say it. I think this link speak for itself.

Kamikaze Sushi - Fall 2005 review [Nov. 6th, 2005|03:21 pm]
With the quarter almost over, I figured it's high time I discuss what I've been watching every Saturday night.

Yakitate!! Japan
-This goes under the "Anime I never thought would be good based on it's subject matter" category with Prince of Tennis. Yakitate!! Japan is about Azuma Kazuma, a kid with warm hands who wants to create Japanese Bread. Seriously. Like Prince of Tennis, the characters are the driving force of the series. If they weren't interesting and likeable, the show just wouldn't be interesting. Sort of like Prince of Tennis.

2x2=Shinobuden
-Yay for wacky ninja comedy. There's no real story. Just the crazy adventures of Shinobu, a bunch of visually identical ninjas (one of whom is named Sasuke), their perverted master Onsokumaru (a winged yellow ball with a face and limbs), and Shinobu's normal friend Kaede. Oh, and there's an alligator (or crocodile) that lives with the ninjas. The humor is mainly ecchi, an unusal mix of hentai, yaoi, and yuri.

Sunabozu
-Sunabozu is a bounty hunter in the future where Japan is a desert wasteland. It's funny, but the jokes have gotten a little stale. As I said to my roommate a little while ago, "Okay, he likes big boobs, I get it!"

Genshiken
-"It's funny because it's true." That's all I need to say, but I want to say more. Any otaku, convention attendee, anime club member, or more-than-casual anime fan should be able to relate to the characters in this show. I relate to most of the male members of Genshiken in one way or another, except for the show's token bishounen, Kohsaka, the uber-otaku who doesn't look like an otaku. I have no complaints about this series other than it should be more than 12 episodes.

Full Metal Alchemist
-Yeah, we're watching it. Apparently because the guys in charge hated the dub enough to show everyone the fansubs. Anyway, I've actually started liking it more by watching it in Japanese. So far we're 10 episodes into the series, and I'm patiently waiting for a reason to like Mustang. Usually I like the characters that are total jerks to the main character, but Mustang's not cool. He's just an ass.

Evangelion
-Yeah. It's finally happened. I'm actually watching this in my spare time, not with the club. If I didn't know about Eva because of its reputation, I probably couldn't stand to watch it. The beginning of the series feels way too much like Mobile Suit Gundam. Even the music. I've only watched four episodes, and Misato became my favorite character before the first one ended. I don't think that has happened with any anime I've watched before. EVER.

Bleach
-I have the first five episodes but I've only watched two. But so far it's pretty good. I need to watch more, but I'm going to be busy this week.

Tennis ball o tenisuru... [Oct. 2nd, 2005|04:36 pm]
[mood | ecstatic]
[music |"Make You Free"]

I spent two hours at Forsyth Park practicing Tennis, sandwiched by a combined hour walking to and from the park. And I made considerable progress in that time. The vast majority of my serves went over the net and inside the boundary lines. I'm still having issues with getting it over the net and in the opposite square, but not everyone can be an Echizen. My hand-eye coordination has definitely improved. The only serves I missed were the ones I accidentally threw forward into the air.

For a while I had the whole set of four courts to myself until some other people started playing. That's when I noticed they served with forehand swings. Those, I'm not terribly good at.

I think I'm going to go back some time this week (probably tomorrow) to practice my accuracy and backhand swing. I just wish I personally knew someone that plays tennis. What I really need to practice is returning the ball and improving my depth perception.

Incidentally, today was the first time I tried Red Bull. While I was out practicing, some people in one of those Red Bull trucks came by the park to promote the drink and offered me one. It tasted pretty good, but I didn't really feel any energy boost from it. Though that could be because I had already been out there for almost two hours when I drank it. Eh, at least it didn't give me a weird feeling in my chest like other energy drinks.

Watching Cartoon Network is fun again! [Sep. 23rd, 2005|01:04 pm]
When I discovered that the Fox affiliate in Savannah doesn't show The Simpsons in syndication, I resorted to watching Cartoon Network. Thta was when I discovered that their newer shows are actually good.

I'm almost addicted to Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends. And Bloo has become my favorite character after seeing the episodes where he started hiccuping uncontrollably, and the one where all of the kids at school create imaginary friends like Bloo then decide they don't want them.

I never thought I'd say this, but Hi-Hi Puffy Ami Yumi Show is actually entertaining. Some of the plots border on typical afternoon cartoon, but I was amazed by the use of Japanese in the cartoon. Sure, it's simple phrases like "Ne, Yumi-chan", "Sugoii" and "Yosh!", but the fact that they actually speak Japanese every so often is awesome! The only spoken Chinese I've heard on Jackie Chan Adventures is "Yu Mo Gwe Gwe Fi Di Zow" (I think that's how it's spelled).

Dragonball Z is on again, but it's actually interesting. Funimation FINALLY redubbed the Saiyan and Freeza sagas and the show is now airing at 10:30 pm UNCUT. So basically, Zarbon (who calls Freeza "lord", not "master") actually bled when Vegeta (who's a bastard according to Krillin) punched him in the stomach then blasted a hole in his stomach. Vegeta said "damn it" a few times, and when he realized Gohan tricked him he threatened to kill him. Even better, HFIL is Hell again!
